Key Responsibilities

As an Interventional Radiology Nurse, your duties may include:

Patient Care & Clinical Support

  • Preparing patients before, during, and after interventional radiology procedures
  • Monitoring patient vitals and responding promptly to any changes in clinical condition
  • Providing compassionate care and clear communication to patients and their families
  • Assisting the IR team in delivering safe, high-quality procedural nursing care

Procedural Assistance & Theatre Support

  • Scrubbing and circulating during interventional radiology procedures
  • Supporting radiologists and consultants with image-guided interventions
  • Maintaining sterile fields and adhering to strict infection control protocols
  • Assisting with vascular access procedures, biopsies, drainages, and stenting

Equipment & Technical Handling

  • Operating and monitoring specialist IR equipment and imaging technology
  • Ensuring all procedural tools, catheters, and contrast media are correctly prepared
  • Checking and restocking procedural trays and supply inventories before each case
  • Reporting any equipment faults or safety concerns to the relevant department lead

Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately completing patient records, care plans, and procedural documentation
  • Maintaining compliance with NMC standards, NHS policies, and clinical governance requirements
  • Participating in team briefings, handovers, and departmental audits as required

Skills & Qualifications

To qualify, you should have:

  • NMC Registration — valid and current with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (UK)
  • A minimum of 1 year post-graduate clinical experience, ideally in interventional radiology, theatre, or a related specialist setting
  • A valid UK visa and passport allowing you to work legally in the United Kingdom
  • Strong understanding of infection control, sterile techniques, and patient safety protocols
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working within a multidisciplinary NHS team
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively, adapting confidently to locum or permanent environments

Work Environment

This role involves:

  • Working within a busy NHS hospital radiology or cath lab setting in Birmingham
  • Exposure to radiation-controlled environments with appropriate PPE and safety measures in place
  • Handling specialist IR and imaging equipment in a fast-paced clinical theatre
  • Collaborating closely with radiologists, consultants, and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Rotating between full-time and part-time schedules depending on contract type and department needs
