Key Responsibilities

As a Casual Bus Driver for the Nova Family of Schools, your duties may include:

Student Transportation & Route Operations

  • Safely and punctually transporting students to and from school during scheduled morning and afternoon bus runs across assigned routes within the CCRCE coverage area
  • Following all assigned bus routes, stops, and schedules accurately and consistently as directed by Pupil Transportation staff and centre management
  • Adapting to changes in bus runs, routes, and assignments as determined at the discretion of the employer and operational requirements
  • Ensuring the safe boarding, seating, and disembarking of all students at every designated stop, with particular attention to the safety of younger and more vulnerable passengers

Vehicle Safety & Pre-Trip Inspection

  • Conducting thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to confirm that the school bus is roadworthy, clean, and safe for student transportation before every run
  • Monitoring fuel levels, tire conditions, lights, mirrors, emergency equipment, and all other vehicle systems and reporting any concerns promptly to the appropriate supervisor
  • Ensuring the school bus is maintained in a clean and orderly condition at all times, suitable for the transportation of school-aged children
  • Parking the school bus at the location designated by the Centre for Education and following all procedures related to vehicle storage and security

Student Supervision & Conduct Management

  • Maintaining a safe, orderly, and respectful environment on the bus throughout every route, ensuring student behavior does not compromise road safety or the wellbeing of other passengers
  • Communicating clearly and calmly with students, enforcing bus conduct rules with firmness and fairness, and escalating behavioral concerns through the appropriate school or centre channels
  • Being attentive to the needs of students with disabilities or special requirements, providing assistance as needed and as directed by the school or transportation management team

Compliance & Administrative Duties

  • Complying with all Nova Scotia traffic laws, school bus transportation regulations, and CCRCE policies and procedures at all times while on duty
  • Completing any required Driver Training Program conducted by CCRCE Pupil Transportation staff prior to commencing employment if directed by the employer
  • Assisting with additional duties as assigned by the employer, which may vary based on operational needs and route requirements
  • Maintaining all required documentation including trip logs, incident reports, and any other records required by the CCRCE or regulatory authorities

Skills & Qualifications

To qualify, you should have:

  • A minimum of a Grade 12 high school diploma or academic equivalent (GED) as the foundational educational requirement for this position
  • A valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License – Class 2B with Air Certification, which is a mandatory and non-negotiable requirement for all bus driver applicants
  • A satisfactory Driver Abstract obtained from the Registry of Motor Vehicles, demonstrating a clean and responsible driving history
  • A clean criminal record check of the vulnerable sector — an original check dated within six months of your hire date will be required, and a CCRCE letter will be provided to take to your local Police or RCMP detachment
  • A valid Child Abuse Register Check — also required as an original check within six months of your hire date, in accordance with CCRCE policies and Nova Scotia child protection regulations
  • A calm, responsible, and student-focused attitude, with the ability to manage a bus full of young passengers safely and respectfully throughout every route

Work Environment

This role involves:

  • Operating a full-sized school bus on public roads across designated routes in Colchester, East Hants, Pictou, and Cumberland Counties in Nova Scotia
  • Working split-shift casual hours primarily in the early morning and mid-to-late afternoon, with no guaranteed minimum hours per week
  • Driving in varying Nova Scotia weather conditions including rain, fog, snow, and ice, requiring strong defensive driving skills and sound judgment
  • Interacting daily with school-aged children, parents, school staff, and transportation supervisors in a professional and student-centered manner
  • Bus parking location and route assignments are subject to change at any time at the discretion of the CCRCE employer

Experience and Specialization

Driving Experience

  • Commercial passenger vehicle operation, particularly Class 2B buses or larger passenger vehicles
  • School bus or pupil transportation driving experience is a strong asset
  • Experience driving in rural and semi-urban Nova Scotia road conditions across multiple counties

Licensing & Certification

  • Nova Scotia Class 2B Driver’s License with Air Certification (mandatory)
  • Successful completion of the CCRCE Driver Training Program (required for selected candidates where applicable)
  • Satisfactory Driver Abstract from the Nova Scotia Registry of Motor Vehicles

Regulatory & Safety Knowledge

  • Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act and school bus transportation regulations
  • CCRCE/CUPE Collective Agreement terms and conditions of employment
  • Vulnerable sector and child protection compliance requirements in a Nova Scotia educational setting

Work Conditions

  • Casual, as-needed employment with no guaranteed hours — shifts are offered based on operational demand and availability within the school calendar
  • Morning runs operate approximately between 6:30 AM and 9:30 AM, and afternoon runs between 1:45 PM and 4:45 PM, with exact times varying by location and route
  • Bus routes, run assignments, parking locations, and additional duties are all subject to change at any time at the employer’s discretion
